OSSD Requirements

Started Grade 9 in 2023 or Earlier

  • 18 compulsory credits
  • 12 optional credits
  • The OSSLT (Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test)
  • At least 2 online learning credits

Started Grade 9 in 2024 or Later

  • 17 compulsory credits
  • 13 optional credits
  • The provincial secondary school literacy requirement
  • The provincial financial literacy graduation requirement
  • At least 2 online learning credits

The OSSLT

Most students fulfill the literacy requirement by passing the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT), based on reading and writing skills. Alternatives are available if a student does not pass — our school principal can share more information.

40 Hours of Community Involvement

A minimum of 40 hours of volunteering — helping students build practical skills, explore careers, and give back. Students can start earning hours the summer before Grade 9.

Ministry Approved

All courses, requirements, and community activities follow the Ontario Ministry of Education guidelines.

When choosing volunteer opportunities, students are encouraged to:

  • Check that the activity is approved by the school and meets Ministry of Education guidelines.
  • Speak with student counsellors, teachers, or the principal about opportunities and questions.

Real-World Skills: Bringing Back the Basics

We prepare students for life beyond school by reintroducing essential life skills into the curriculum, alongside guest lectures and workshops from leading institutions.

English as a Second Language (ESL)

Practical English skills for daily life, education, employment, and community participation, with a focus on Canadian culture and improving fluency and accuracy in reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

Financial Literacy

Understanding personal finance, budgeting, banking, credit, taxes, insurance, managing everyday expenses, saving, and recognizing and avoiding financial scams.

Life Skills

Navigating public transit and transportation, planning trips, understanding traffic and pedestrian safety, accessing health-care services, preparing for severe weather and emergencies, developing digital literacy and online safety, and understanding important documents, identification, government services, and basic rights and responsibilities.

Workplace Readiness

Developing workplace skills in time management, professional communication, teamwork, problem-solving, social etiquette, public speaking, and sales.

Health & Safety

Learning skills for mental and physical health, stress management, healthy sleep habits, exercise and fitness, food and nutrition, first aid, and personal safety and survival.

Regular sessions from leading institutions bring real-world expertise directly into the classroom.

Signature Programs & Leadership Development

Mentorship Program

Grade 12 students are trained as leaders and mentors for younger peers, fostering a sense of responsibility and community.

Grade 12 Leadership Academy

Focused on college and university preparation, resume building, scholarship pathways, and career exploration.

University Pathway Partnerships

AAH proudly collaborates with renowned institutions such as York University Science Program, providing hands-on experiments, research opportunities, and STEM-focused learning, as well as our partnership with the University of Waterloo to offer students advanced problem-solving workshops and competitions.

University Express Pathway Program

Our flagship provides an accelerated pathway for students to gain admission to top Canadian universities. Graduates of this program are eligible for guaranteed acceptance into AAH’s partnered colleges and universities, paving the way for their future success.
