Ace Acumen Heights Recognizes Orange Shirt Day & Truth and Reconciliation
On September 30, the Ace Acumen Heights school community came together to recognize Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
This important day provides an opportunity to honour the children who never returned home, Survivors of residential schools, and their families and communities. It is also a time to reflect on the history and lasting impacts of the residential school system and to continue learning about the histories, cultures, experiences, and contributions of Indigenous Peoples in Canada.
Throughout the day, students participated in meaningful learning and reflection with their teachers. Classroom discussions provided opportunities to learn more about the history of residential schools, consider their lasting impacts, and reflect on the importance of truth, understanding, respect, and reconciliation.
Our Orange Shirt Day Display
As part of the day's activities, students were invited to contribute their own messages to our Orange Shirt Day display.
Each message represented an opportunity to learn, listen, remember, and reflect. Through this activity, students were encouraged to consider the role that each of us can play in continuing to learn about Canada's history and supporting the ongoing journey toward reconciliation.
Orange Shirt Day is inspired by the message “Every Child Matters.” Wearing orange serves as a visible expression of remembrance and respect for residential school Survivors, their families and communities, and the children who did not return home.
Continuing to Learn and Reflect
At Ace Acumen Heights, we believe that education includes creating opportunities for students to learn about important parts of Canada's history and to engage thoughtfully and respectfully with the world around them.
The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation reminds us that reconciliation is an ongoing process that requires listening, learning, reflection, and meaningful action.
We thank our students and staff for taking the time to participate, learn, and reflect together as a school community.
We encourage everyone in our community to continue learning about the significance of September 30 and the histories, experiences, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples.
Every Child Matters. 🧡
